WaterPOC Database

The Water Researchers of Color (WaterPOC) database is created to contribute to the numerous resources to celebrate Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) scientists in disciplines intersecting with water. The database also highlights the intersections of identities within water researchers, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and career stage. This database supports efforts to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of water research by:

  • Increasing the visibility of these researchers to their peers (both marginalized and not) across all career stages
  • Offering a list of researchers that can be used to build peer-mentoring networks among people of color who may feel isolated in their field
  • Increasing recognition of the excellence of research conducted by these individuals
  • Providing a list of role models for students of color

We encourage everyone to share the database with scientists at all career stages. To add yourself to the database, please submit your information using the button below.

For other databases, please check out Geosciences of Color, Databases of Diverse Speakers in STEM, 500 Queer Scientists, and 500 Women Scientists.

Please share with us how this database helped you increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in your field and institution. We would love to hear from you!

AnjaliBoydshe/herBlackDuke UniversityPhD StudentBiology, Public Health, Sustainability, EcologyAnjali is committed to conducting scientific research to examine how environmental pressures will alter marine ecosystems in the future. As a marine community ecologist, Anjali’s research is focused on testing and advancing co-existence theory with field experiments with the applied objective of increasing the resilience and productivity of foundation species. Foundation species form the base for many vital marine ecosystems, in addition to providing habitat for hundreds of commercially and recreationally important species. In recent years, foundations species have been rapidly declining globally. Anjali’s research examines how species interactions (both intra and inter) and physical forces interact to regulate the recovery of foundation species. Currently, she is examining the mesopredator release hypothesis in marshes and seagrasses and the effects of marine soundscapes and biochemical cues on oyster recruitment, settlement, growth, and productivity. Ultimately, Anjali aspires to develop novel ecosystem-based restoration and management practices to restore foundation species world-wide.Looking for postdocs and other jobs in the fieldhttp://www.AnjaliBoyd.com@AnjaliBoydUSA

Katarena Matosshe/herAsian, LatinX, LGBTQ2+, Person of ColorInstitute of Climate Studies at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Brazil)ScientistClimate (Change), Physical HydrologyMy master’s research at the University of Arizona centered around the Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO) project at Biosphere 2; one of the most ambitious experimental facilities in the world designed to study hydrologically mediated biogeochemical processes. My work focused on understanding the hydrologic response of three identically built, large-scale (330 m3) hillslopes during a 50 day-long simultaneous rainfall-runoff experiment. To do this, I analyzed data from multiple sensors embedded in each hillslope measuring soil water content and matric potential, as well as external sensors recording mass changes, and discharge. The high-temporal resolution and spatially dense network of sensors available per hillslope gave us a unique view of the differences in internal dynamics and response across the 3 identically built hillslopes. By looking at the storage-discharge relationships, water table fluctuations, and soil-water retention curves at varying scales, I learned the importance of having a well-defined conceptual model of the system to understand how heterogenous patters of soil properties lead to unique hillslope responses. The work from my master's thesis as well as additional modeling will be ready for submission by December 2020!Searching for PhD Student position in hydrologyhttps://www.researchgate.net/profile/Katarena_Matos?ev=hdr_xprf&_sg=afDkIkFTwwplsCp91UG4aUNz0OSv7GQLC3_ngLeZa0YhO1l9tJ78DoYhXWcHi26S2hdcFFUbdRg1CqWuZtIlCYr-https://www.linkedin.com/in/katarenamatos/@katarenamatoshttps://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjbv5OIiObqAhUvIrkGHZTuBRUQFjABegQIBhAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fuanews.arizona.edu%2Fstory%2Fyoung-mother-found-her-passion-ua&usg=AOvVaw1jQL7KBmPc0F-HltgDHXf4South America
